Record water discharge from the Birpur barrage on the Kosi river and the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak river in Bihar has sparked flood concerns in low-lying areas across 14 districts. The increased discharge is a result of heavy rainfall in both Nepal and local basins. Water levels spiked significantly on Saturday, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures such as making public announcements via microphones for residents to relocate to higher ground. The state water resources department has issued a high alert to district officials, directing them to closely monitor embankments and prepare for potential flooding. The barrage discharge is expected to reach levels not seen in decades, with the Birpur barrage forecasted to reach levels close to the record set 56 years ago, and the Valmikinagar barrage nearing levels not seen in two decades. The 14 districts at the highest risk include Supaul, Saharsa, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, and Katihar.Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Vaishali, and Samastipur are at risk of flooding due to the overflow of the Gandak river. Additionally, the Bagmati river is also causing significant flood concerns in Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur districts, among others.
